The Heavy Veil Of Maya

ਮਾਇਆ ਪਟਲ ਪਟਲ ਹੈ ਭਾਰੀ ਘਰੁ ਘੂਮਨਿ ਘੇਰਿ ਘੁਲਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
maa-i-aa patal patal hai bhaaree ghar ghooman ghayr ghulaavaigo.
The veil of Maya is a thick and heavy veil, a whirlpool which destroys one's home.
paap bikaar manoor sabh bhaaray bikh dutar tari-o na jaavaigo. ||6||
Sins and corrupt vices are totally heavy, like rusted slag. They will not let you cross over the poisonous and treacherous world-ocean. ||6||

In plain words

The veil of Maya is thick, so thick and heavy. Like a whirlpool, it spins the home round and round and pulls it apart.

Wrongdoing and bad habits are heavy, like rusted scrap iron. With that weight, no one can cross the poisonous, rough sea of the world.

Even a heavy, foggy heart can find its way to lighter, clearer ground.
The deeper layer

The pull of the world is a thick, heavy veil, and wrongdoing weighs you down like scrap iron.

Maa-i-aa patal is the veil of maya, the thick curtain that makes us think outside things are the whole story. It spins us like a whirlpool. Manoor means rusted scrap iron. It is a picture of how selfish habits pile up and weigh us down, like a backpack filling with stones one at a time.

With that load, the verse says, the rough sea of life cannot be crossed.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel lighter when your thoughts get heavy and tangled?
