Verse 6 of 9

Gold Bracelets, Empty Without The Name

ਕਨਿਕ ਕਨਿਕ ਪਹਿਰੇ ਬਹੁ ਕੰਗਨਾ ਕਾਪਰੁ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਬਨਾਵੈਗੋ ॥
kanik kanik pahiray baho kangnaa kaapar bhaaNt banaavaigo.
People wear lots of bracelets, glittering with gold; they wear all sorts of fine clothes.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਭਿ ਫੀਕ ਫਿਕਾਨੇ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈਗੋ ॥੫॥
naam binaa sabh feek fikaanay janam marai fir aavaigo. ||5||
But without the Naam, they are all bland and insipid. They are born, only to die again, in the cycle of reincarnation. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

People wear many bracelets glittering with gold, and dress in fine clothes of every kind.

But without the Naam, all of it is flat and tasteless. They are born, they die, and they come round again.

Outer shine cannot fill an inner emptiness — only the Naam does.
The deeper layer

Shiny things on the outside cannot fill the empty place inside. Only the Naam can.

Kanik kanik: gold upon gold, bracelets and fine clothes of every kind. Feek fikaanay: without the Naam, all of it is bland, like food with no salt. Janam marai fir aavaigo: such a life goes round and round, born and dying and coming back again.

The verse does not scold anyone for enjoying nice things. It simply notices something true. A new phone is exciting for a week, then it is just a phone. Outside shine cannot fill the quiet hunger inside. Only the Naam does that.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever had something that looked wonderful but did not make you happy?
