The School Where The Heart Learns The One

pa-orhee.
Pauree:
har agam agochar agam har ki-o kar har darsan pikhaa.
The Lord is Inaccessible and Unfathomable. How will I see the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan?
kichh vakhar ho-ay so varnee-ai tis roop na rikhaa.
If He were a material object, then I could describe Him, but He has no form or feature.
jis bujhaa-ay aap bujhaa-ay day-ay so-ee jan dikhaa.
Understanding comes only when the Lord Himself gives understanding; only such a humble being sees it.
satsangat satgur chatsaal hai jit har gun sikhaa.
The Sat Sangat, the True Congregation of the True Guru, is the school of the soul, where the Glorious Virtues of the Lord are studied.
Dhan Dhan so rasnaa Dhan kar Dhan so paaDhaa satguroo jit mil har laykhaa likhaa. ||8||
Blessed, blessed is the tongue, blessed is the hand, and blessed is the Teacher, the True Guru; meeting Him, the Account of the Lord is written. ||8||

In plain words

The One is beyond reach, beyond all seeing — so how will I ever see the One?

If the One were a thing, I could describe it; but the One has no shape and no outline.

Only the person the One helps to understand comes to understand and to see.

The Sangat of the True Guru is a school, where we learn the goodness of the One.

Blessed is the tongue, blessed is the hand, and blessed is the Teacher, the True Guru — meeting whom, I write out the lesson of the One.

The Sangat is the school where the heart learns the One.
The deeper layer

The Sangat is a school, and the One is the lesson worth learning.

Chatsaal is a village schoolroom, and paaDhaa is its teacher. The Sangat is the classroom, the True Guru is the teacher, and the lesson is har gun, the good qualities of the One. Tis roop na rikhaa: the One has no shape or outline, so no one can draw a picture of it. You come to know the One the way you learn a song, by being taught.

Think of learning to write your letters. A good teacher guides your hand until the shapes come out right. Blessed is the hand that writes, the tongue that sings, and the teacher who shows the way.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people you always seem to learn the best things around?
