In plain words

The Name of the One is sweet nectar. Remember the One, with love for the True Guru.

The Name of the One is pure. Saying it and hearing it, sorrow goes away.

Those who love and remember the Name are the ones whose foreheads carried this from the very start.

In the court of the One they are dressed in robes of honor; the One has come to live in their minds.

Nanak says: their faces shine. They listen to the One, and their minds fill with love.

Those who listen with love are welcomed and robed in honor.
The deeper layer

Listen to the Naam with love, and you are welcomed with honor.

Har har naam amrit hai: the Name of the One is nectar, sweet and life-giving. Pavit means pure; saying it and hearing it carries sorrow away. Dhur mastak likhi-aa is an old picture: something written on the forehead from the very beginning, a gift that was waiting.

Painaa-ee-an means they are dressed in robes. In the old royal courts, a guest the king wished to honor was given a fine robe to wear. Suni-aa man bhaa-ay: they listened, and their hearts loved what they heard. Think of a friend whose face lights up when you tell them good news.

A Question to Sit With

When has listening closely to someone made them light up?
