ਮਃ ੪ ॥

Fourth Mehl:
ਅਖੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਿ ਕਸਾਈਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਖੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥
akhee paraym kasaa-ee-aa har har naam pikhaNniH.
The eyes which are attracted by the Lord's Love behold the Lord through the Name of the Lord.
ਜੇ ਕਰਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਦੇਖਦੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਢਿ ਦਿਚੰਨ੍ਹ੍ਹਿ ॥੨॥
jay kar doojaa daykh-day jan naanak kadh dichaNniH. ||2||
If they gaze upon something else, O servant Nanak, they ought to be gouged out. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Eyes pulled close by love see the One through the Name.

Nanak says: if such eyes gazed on anything else, they would no longer be fit to be eyes.

Love makes the eyes want only one sight — the Beloved.
The deeper layer

Eyes full of love want to see only the One.

Akhee praym kasaa-ee-aa: eyes pulled close by love, the way a magnet pulls iron. Pikhann: they see. The second line is fierce: eyes that look at doojaa, anything other than the One, are not worth keeping. It is a picture of single-hearted love, like a sunflower that keeps turning toward the sun. This is Kaanraa's yearning at its most focused.

A Question to Sit With

What is so dear to you that you could look at it forever?
