Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The Naam of the One, Har, Har, is sweet nectar (amrit — the sweetest drink of all). Keep that nectar close inside your heart.
The One is present in the Sangat. Think on the Guru's Word, and you will understand.
I kept the Naam of the One in my mind, and the poison of ego was driven out.
Those who do not remember the Naam of the One lose their whole life, like a bet lost in a game of chance.
When the Guru is pleased, the One is remembered, and the Naam is kept close in the heart.
Nanak says: their faces shine bright in the true court of the One.
The Naam is sweet, and it works like medicine for a heart made sick by ego.
It is called amrit naam, the nectar-Naam. Amrit is the sweetest drink there is, the one that makes you feel fully alive. Vich sangat: that sweetness is found among the Sangat, where the One is present.
Then comes the sickness: bikh ha-umai, "the poison of ego." Ha-umai means "me, me, me," the feeling that I am the center of everything. Remembering the Naam drains that poison out, the way cool water rinses a bee sting.
The verse also warns that a life without remembering is lost, like a bet lost at a gambling table. Then it turns to gur tuthai, "when the Guru is pleased": the One is remembered, and the face shines.
What is something sweet you can carry inside you all day long?
