Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. Its Name is Truth. It is the Creator of all. It is fearless and full of love, beyond time, never born, shining on its own. And the One is found by the Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
O One who is everywhere, beautiful One: no one has found where You end.
I am a child, and You cherish me and look after me. You are the Great One, my Mother and my Father.
The One too vast to measure is also the parent who holds you like a child.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Raamaa ram is the One present everywhere; ant na paa-i-aa: no one finds its limit. Guru Ram Das sets that endless size right beside tenderness. Baarik (child) and pitaa ... maa-i-aa (father, mother) make the infinite close and warm, like a parent's arms around a small child.
When have you felt both small and completely safe at the same time?
