Reflected Like A Face In Water

ਪਾਨੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਦੇਖੁ ਮੁਖੁ ਜੈਸਾ ॥
paanee maahi daykh mukh jaisaa.
As one's face is reflected in the water,
ਨਾਮੇ ਕੋ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਬੀਠਲੁ ਐਸਾ ॥੨॥੧॥
naamay ko su-aamee beethal aisaa. ||2||1||
so does Naam Dayv's Beloved Lord and Master appear. ||2||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Just as you see your own face looking back at you from the water,

Namdev says: that is how my Master, my beloved Beethal, appears to me.

The Beloved is as near and clear as your own face in still water.
The deeper layer

The One is as close to you as your own face in still water.

This finishes the mirror picture from the opening line. Lean over a calm pond and there you are, looking back. The One is not far off in some distant heaven. The One is that near and that clear.

Beethal is Namdev's loving name for his Beloved. It is the name of the form of the One worshipped at Pandharpur, a temple town in India. Here it simply means "my Beloved." A Bhagat's own close, personal name for the One closes the whole raag. That honors love for the One in every form, from every kind of person.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you feel closest to what you love most?
