Free, And Beyond Every Label

ਬਸੈ ਘਟਾ ਘਟ ਲੀਪ ਨ ਛੀਪੈ ॥
basai ghataa ghat leep na chheepai.
He dwells in each and every heart; no stain or stigma sticks to Him.
ਬੰਧਨ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਜਾਤੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ॥੧॥
banDhan muktaa jaat na deesai. ||1||
He is liberated from bondage; He does not belong to any social class. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One lives in each and every heart. No stain or smudge sticks to the One.

The One is free of every bond, and belongs to no caste or social class at all.

The One wears no caste or rank — and neither, underneath, do you.
The deeper layer

The One lives in every heart, and no label sticks to it.

Leep na chheepai: no smudge or stain can touch the One. Think of a raincoat in a storm. The rain runs off, and nothing soaks in. Jaat na deesai: the One has no caste, no social class, no rank at all.

Namdev was born into a community that people around him ranked as low. So when he sings this, it lands like quiet thunder. Everyone is equal. If the One has no rank and lives in every heart alike, then all the ladders people build to rank each other are made up.

A Question to Sit With

What labels do people get stuck with that say nothing about who they are?
