In plain words

Yogis, wise teachers, people deep in meditation, and the thousand-headed serpent of the old stories all meditate on the waves of the One.

Nanak says: I would give my whole self for the saints, who stay with the One always.

The company of good, steady souls is worth giving yourself for.
The deeper layer

The best place to be is near those who stay close to the One.

First the verse paints a big picture. Jog gi-aan Dhi-aan: yogis, teachers and meditators. Saykhnaagai: even the great thousand-headed serpent of the old stories. Sagal jaapeh tarangee: all of them meditate on the One's waves. The One is like an endless ocean, and everything turns toward its waves.

Then Guru Arjan, signing as Nanak, says santan balihaarai. Santan means the saints, good and holy people. Balihaarai means I would gladly give myself for them. They are parabh kay sad sangee, the One's companions always.

It is like wanting to sit with the friends who are closest to the person you love most. The warmth of Raag Kalyaan gathers around these holy people.

A Question to Sit With

Whose company makes you feel closer to your best self?
