In plain words

Understanding, wisdom and cleverness, honor and beauty, joy, wealth and respect,

every comfort, bliss, happiness and freedom: Nanak says, all of them come from chanting the Naam of the Lord.

Every kind of wellbeing flows from keeping what is true close at hand.
The deeper layer

Every good thing grows from remembering the Naam.

The verse lists gifts one after another. Surat is understanding. Mat is wisdom. Sobhaa is honor, roop is beauty, Dhan is wealth, and maan is respect.

Then it crowns the list: sarab sookh aanand — every comfort and every joy. Last of all comes kali-aan, deep wellbeing. That word is also the name of this raag, Kalyaan. A raag is a musical mood. Here the raag's own name shows up as the fruit of the Naam.

Jap raam naam means keep remembering the Naam. Think of the roots of a tree. You cannot see them, but every leaf and fruit comes from them. Remembering the One is that root. All these good things are its fruit.

A Question to Sit With

What good things in your life flow from one habit you treasure?
