The potential energy of fire is within the wood; it is released if you know how to rub it and generate friction.

In just the same way, the Lord's Name is the Light within all; the Essence is extracted by following the Guru's Teachings. ||1||

In plain words

Fire is hidden inside wood. Rub the wood with care and skill, and the fire comes out.

In the same way, the Naam of the One is the light inside all things. Following the Guru's teaching, I draw that essence out.

The light you are looking for is already inside you, waiting to be woken.
The deeper layer

The light of the One is already inside everything, the way fire waits inside wood.

Look at the picture first. Kaasat meh ji-o hai baisantar: fire is hidden in wood. Kaasat is wood, and baisantar is fire. The fire sleeps there until rubbing wakes it up. Think of rubbing two sticks together at camp until a flame appears.

In the same way, raam naam hai jot sabaa-ee: the Name is the light in everyone. It is not somewhere far away. It is already inside all things, waiting.

Tat gurmat kaadh la-eejai: the tat, the essence, is drawn out through gurmat, the Guru's teaching. The Guru shows how to wake the fire.

A Question to Sit With

When have you discovered something wonderful was inside you all along?
