There are nine doors, but the taste of these nine doors is bland and insipid. The Essence of Ambrosial Nectar trickles down through the Tenth Door.

kirpaa kirpaa kirpaa kar pi-aaray gur sabdee har ras peejai. ||2||
Please take pity on me - be kind and compassionate, O my Beloved, that I may drink in the Sublime Essence of the Lord, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The body has nine doors — eyes, ears, nose, mouth and the rest — and what comes through them tastes flat and dull. The nectar trickles in through the tenth door.

Be kind to me, be kind, be kind, my Beloved, so that through the Guru's Word I may drink the sweet taste of the One.

The deepest sweetness comes through a quiet door within.
The deeper layer

The deepest sweetness comes through an inner door, the tenth door.

The body has na-o darvaaj, nine doors: eyes, ears, nose, mouth and the rest. Through them we taste the outside world. But their taste is feekay, flat and bland. It never fills us for long.

Ras amrit dasvay chu-eejai: the nectar trickles through the tenth door. This is the inner door of awareness. Think of a house with nine windows onto a noisy street, and one quiet door into a garden.

So the seeker asks, kirpaa kirpaa kirpaa: mercy, mercy, mercy. Then, through the Guru's Word, har ras peejai, one drinks the sweetness of the One. Grace is asked for and received. It is a gift, never a wage.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go, inside yourself, to find deep quiet?
