Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O One, only You know Your own good qualities. Nanak says: I, Your servant, come to Your shelter.
You are the ocean, and I am Your fish. Be kind, and keep me always with You.
You do not have to understand the ocean to be safe as its fish.
The One is the ocean and we are its fish, asking to be kept close.
The fish and the ocean come back in the closing verse. Barahm too jaaneh: only You know Your good qualities. Saran pareejai: I come to Your shelter. Jal niDh meen ham tayray: You are the ocean, and I am Your fish. Sang rakheejai: keep me with You. The seeker asks only to stay where life is.
A Question to Sit With
Where, or with whom, do you feel completely safe to just be yourself?
