Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O Lord, make me the servant of Your servants.
As long as there is breath in me, let me drink in the dust of holy people's feet.
The greatest place to stand is low, beside those who serve.
To ask to be the servant of the One's servants is to ask for the lowest, safest place, close to holy people for as long as you breathe.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Daasan daas: the servant of servants. Jab lag saas: as long as breath lasts. Saadhoo dhoor piveejai: drink in the dust of the holy, an old picture of loving humility. It is the joy of being small enough to receive.
