In plain words

O One, You are the Giver, my all-powerful Master. I ask You for just one gift.

Nanak says: be kind to Your servant, O One, and let Your feet live in my heart forever.

Of all the things you could ask for, nearness to what you love may be the best.
The deeper layer

Of everything the Giver could give, the one gift worth asking for is to keep the One close.

Ik maaga-o: I ask for only one thing. Sad baseh ridai mohi har charaanai: may the One's feet live in my heart forever. The feet are an old picture of humble nearness, like sitting close beside someone you love. Of all the gifts, the devotee asks for nearness alone.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for just one thing, what would it be?
