Servant Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of the Door of the Lord, who protects his honor. ||4||6|| Chhakaa 1.

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The One became kind all on the One's own, and lovingly tuned my heart to the One.

Nanak says: I, Your servant, have come for shelter at Your door, O One, and You keep my honor safe.

Sometimes kindness simply arrives, and all you have to do is come and rest in it.
The deeper layer

Kindness from the One comes on its own, and the One keeps safe whoever comes to its door.

Aapay ho-ay kirpaal: mercy that rises on its own, a gift never earned. Saran du-aar: shelter at the One's door. Laaj rakhaavhigay: the One keeps the devotee's honor safe. Think of a home where the porch light is always on. This shabad closes Guru Ram Das's set of six shabads in this raag (chhakaa 1).

A Question to Sit With

Where is the door you can always come back to?
