Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I come like a beggar, and I beg and beg for Your Naam, O One.

You hold up everyone, You are the Master of all, and You give every kind of peace.

You can come with open hands and ask for the one thing that matters most.
The deeper layer

Ask for the one treasure that holds everything: the Naam.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Jaachik is the beggar, the one who comes with open hands. The beggar asks only for naam, the one treasure. Sarab Dhaar means the support of all, and sukh samooh kay daatay means the giver of every kind of peace. Asking with empty hands is dignity here, never shame, and the request is the highest one.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for only one gift, what would it be?
