Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
O my mind, let me sing the Name every day — softly, gladly, the way you hum a song you love.
The One I am singing to is far too vast to see with my eyes. But when I sit with a true teacher, something opens, and I begin to sense that One everywhere.
Grace is already flowing toward me. When I let it in, my whole heart turns and leans toward the One, the way a plant leans toward the light.
Everyone reaches for the One in their own way, and the heart that delights in the One is drawn close.
This is the opening of Raag Kaydaaraa — a raag built around raam naam, singing the Name. The rahau (Pause) line sets the keynote for the whole shabad: raam naam nit gaavee-ai — sing the Name continually. The One is agam agochar — beyond reach of the senses and the thinking mind — yet through the Perfect Guru the unseen becomes seen. Kirpaa (grace) is not earned; it is what turns a heart toward the One (har liv laavee-ai). The closing line — everyone worships, and the one pleasing to the One is accepted — is rendered warmly: not as exclusion, but as the heart that delights in the One being drawn near.
What is a small song or phrase you could hum each day to keep something you love in mind?
