Verse 3 of 5

Awe That Becomes Love

ਭੈ ਬਿਚਿ ਭਾਉ ਭਾਇ ਕੋਊ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਭਾਈ ॥
bhai bich bhaa-o bhaa-ay ko-oo boojheh har ras paavai bhaa-ee.
In the Fear of God, is the Love of God. Only those few who understand His Love obtain the sublime essence of the Lord, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਜੇਤੇ ਘਟ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਮਹਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪੀਆਈ ॥੨॥
jaytay ghat amrit sabh hee meh bhaavai tiseh pee-aa-ee. ||2||
As many hearts as there are - in all of them, is His Ambrosial Nectar; as He pleases, He causes them to drink it in. ||2||

In plain words

Deep respect and wonder toward the One slowly turn into love — though only a few come to taste how that works.

The same sweetness rests inside every single heart, and the One shares it with whoever is ready to receive it.

Real awe does not push you away from the One — it grows into love.
The deeper layer

Deep respect for the One grows into love.

Bhai bich bhaa-o: in bhai there is bhaa-o. Bhai is often translated "fear." Here it means awe, the wonder you feel before something vast. Bhaa-o means love.

Think of standing at the edge of the ocean. At first it feels huge, almost scary. Then you come to love it.

Kabir's point is generous and meant for everyone. Jaytay ghat amrit sabh hee meh: the nectar is in every heart. The only difference between people is whether they are ready to receive it. Awe, felt rightly, draws you closer. It does not push you away.

A Question to Sit With

When has feeling small before something vast actually made you feel closer to it?
