There is only One. And the One is found by the True Guru's grace — a gift that is always here, waiting for an open heart.
O mother, I feel wide awake — as if I have come out of a long sleep — and it happened among good, loving people.
Seeing how much my Beloved One loves me, I sing the Name, the greatest treasure I could ever hold.
I am so thirsty to catch sight of that One that my eyes stay turned toward Him.
And all my smaller thirsts — for this thing, for that thing — have quietly faded away.
Guru Arjan (Mehl 5) opens in an intimate voice, speaking to a mother: santsang jaagee — awakened in the company of the good. Waking is the shift from sleepwalking through life to real awareness. Naam nidhaanee — the Name is the treasure. The lovely turn is bisree ti-aas bidaanee: when the deep thirst for the One takes hold, the many smaller thirsts simply lose their pull. Desire is not crushed; it is reordered around love.
What is something you wanted a lot less once you found something you loved more?
