What Opens the Door? Letting Go of Pride

ਕਉਨੁ ਸੁ ਜਤਨੁ ਉਪਾਉ ਕਿਨੇਹਾ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਉਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥

What is the method, what is the effort, and what is the service, which inspires me to contemplate You?

Abandon your egotistical pride and attachment; O Nanak, you shall be saved in the Society of the Saints. ||2||3||5||

In plain words

I keep asking: what is the way? What should I do, how should I serve, to keep You always in my thoughts?

And the answer comes quietly: set down your pride, loosen your tight grip on things.

Do that, keep the company of good people, and you will find yourself carried safely home.

The door does not open by trying harder, but by setting down pride.
The deeper layer

The pauri poses a direct question — kaun so jatan, upaa-o, sevaa? what method, what effort, what service opens the way? — and then answers it, which is why the question is voiced plainly here. The answer is disarmingly simple: maan abhimaan moh taj — let go of pride and clinging — and santeh sang udhaari, be carried across in the company of the good. Effort is not the door; humility and good company are. Guru Arjan signs the shabad.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you are gripping too tightly that might feel better to loosen?
