I have made plenty of friends in this life — but it is the One alone I give myself to.
No single person has every good quality; only the One is filled to overflowing with them all.
Friends are good, and we love them. But only the One has every good quality, so only the One gets our whole heart.
Mai kee-ay mitar anayk ikas balihaaree-aa — I have made many friends, but I give myself to the One alone. The heart is not against friends. It has made many, and that is good. But it saves its complete self-giving for the One. There is an order to love: many people to befriend, and One to give your whole self to.
The reason is gentle and true. Sabh gun kis hee naahi har poor bhandaaree-aa — no one has all the good qualities; only the One is a full storehouse of them. Every friend, however dear, is a mix. They have strengths and weak spots, just like each of us.
Think of a team. One player is fast. Another is great at defense. Nobody is best at everything. If you expect one teammate to be perfect at every position, you will both end up let down.
It is the same with people we love. Asking one person to be everything, and never to fail you, is asking for what no person can give. Only the One is complete and lacks nothing.
So the heart loves its friends for the real good they bring. And it gives its whole self to the One, who alone is whole. This is not cold. It is wise. It takes an impossible weight off our friendships. And it gives our deepest love to the One who can hold it.
Do you ever ask one person to be 'everything' for you — and how might it free both of you to love them without demanding they be infinite?
