Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One's Name is sung in every direction, everywhere you turn — and those who sing it are clothed in peace.
I seek your shelter; Nanak gives himself to you.
The Name is sung everywhere, and the people who sing it wear peace like beautiful clothes.
Chahu dis japee-ai naa-o — the Name is repeated in all four directions. North, south, east, west. The praise of the One does not belong to one people or one place. It rises from everywhere, like a song the whole world joins at its best.
Sookh savaaree-aa — those who sing it are adorned with peace. "Adorned" means dressed up, made beautiful. So peace is not only a feeling inside. It is something they wear. Think of putting on your best clothes for a festival. Singing the Name dresses the heart in calm the same way.
Then the verse ends the way the pause line keeps ending. Mai aahee orh tuhaar naanak balihaaree-aa — I have come to Your shelter; Nanak gives himself to You.
By now the pattern of this shabad is clear. Each verse looks at something different. The search that cannot reach the end. The scary road. The beautiful Beloved. The many friends. The Name sung everywhere. And each time, the heart comes back to the same two moves: it finds shelter in the One, and it gives itself to the One.
The Name dressing its singers in peace is one more reason to do both.
Could remembrance 'clothe you in peace' — a calm you wear rather than chase — and what would help you put it on?
