It Is All His Doing, and That Is Relief

ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਉਪਾਏ ॥
jee-a jant sabh tuDh upaa-ay.
You have created all beings and creatures.
ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਿਤੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥

As it pleases You, You assign tasks to one and all.

sabh kichh keetaa tayraa hovai naahee kichh asaarhaa jee-o. ||3||
All things are Your Doing; we can do nothing ourselves. ||3||

In plain words

You made every creature, every living being, all of them. And you place each one wherever you wish, giving each their task. Everything that happens is your doing — not ours. There is really nothing that is ours alone, nothing we accomplish all by ourselves. It is all you.

To say "nothing is mine to do, it is all the One's doing" is not terror but relief — because the One who does everything is the One who loves and protects you.
The deeper layer

This pauri completes the surrender that the security of the Rahao makes possible. Jeea jant sabh tudh upaae — "you created (upaae) all (sabh) beings and creatures (jeea jant)." And jit jit bhaanaa tit tit laae — "wherever it bhaanaa (pleased you), there you laae (attached, assigned, set) [each one]." Every creature is placed in its role, its task, its situation, by the One's bhaana (will). This is Hukam again — the way existence is ordered (Shabad 12, Shabad 18).

The radical conclusion: sabh kichh keetaa teraa hovai, naahee kichh asaarhaa — "everything that happens is your keetaa (doing); there is nothing that is asaarhaa (ours)." Read this carefully. The seeker is releasing the very idea that she is the doer of anything. Not "I do some things and you do others," but "everything is your doing; nothing is mine." This is the complete dissolving of the proud, anxious haumai — the ego that takes credit, that imagines itself the author of its life, that therefore lives in fear of failing.

Here is the deep connection to the Rahao: this radical surrender is only possible, and only peaceful, because of the security established there. If you believed you were alone and unprotected, then "nothing is mine to do" would be terrifying — helplessness without a safety net. But because the One is your father, mother, protector everywhere (Rahao), to say "it is all your doing" is not terror but relief. You can lay down the exhausting burden of being the sole author of your fate, because the One who does everything is the One who loves and protects you. Surrender is safe because the One is trustworthy. The two halves fit: total security (Rahao) makes total surrender (here) possible, and total surrender deepens the peace of total security. To stop being the anxious doer is freedom, not loss — when the Doer is your loving parent.

A Question to Sit With

It can feel scary to admit we don't control everything. But if the one truly in control loves you completely, does letting go feel different — more like rest than like fear?
