I would give my whole self for the people who keep the Guru's **bani**, the sacred Word, living in their hearts. Right in the middle of all the world's darkness and mess, they find the **niranjan** — the One who stays perfectly clean and unstained by any of it. And when they do, their little inner light slips into the great Light, like a candle flame disappearing into sunlight.
This is the Rahao, the "pause" line — the center of the shabad. It says you can find the spotless One right in the middle of the mess.
It turns on a lovely play on words: anjan maahi niranjan paa-i-aa. Anjan is black soot, or kohl, the dark eyeliner. It stands for the world's smudges, darkness and tangles. Niranjan is its exact opposite: "without soot" — the spotless, stainless One. So the line says: right in the middle of the soot, they found the Spotless. You don't have to run to a clean, faraway cave to find the One. The Pure One can be found inside the messy, ordinary world.
This is Guru Amar Das all over. He doesn't say "the world is dirty, so escape it." The spotless One is right here — in homework, arguments, letdowns and ordinary days. Think of a lotus, which grows clean and bright out of a muddy pond. What helps you see it is the bani, the Guru's Word. Gur kee banee man vasaavani-aa — they keep the Guru's Word living in the mind. That is what lets you see the Clean shining inside the unclean.
The result carries on the shabad's jewel picture: jotee jot milaavani-aa — light merging into Light. This links to the jewel within from the first verse. That inner jewel is this inner light, a spark of the same fire as the great Light. Finding the Pure One in the world's darkness means your small flame remembers it was never apart from the sun. Notice the loving tone again: ha-o vaaree — "I would give myself." The Guru bows to anyone who lives this way. He leads with love, not orders.
Can you think of a moment of real beauty, kindness, or peace that happened right in the middle of an ordinary or even hard day? What if that was the "spotless" showing up in the "soot"?
