Verse 3 of 9

A Universe Within, Its Door Opened by Grace

ਇਸੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥
is kaa-i-aa andar bahut pasaaraa.
Within this body are countless vast vistas;
ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅਤਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
naam niranjan at agam apaaraa.
the Immaculate Naam is totally Inaccessible and Infinite.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਪਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
gurmukh hovai so-ee paa-ay aapay bakhas milaavani-aa. ||2||
He alone becomes Gurmukh and obtains it, whom the Lord forgives, and unites with Himself. ||2||

In plain words

Inside this one small body there is a whole universe — endless room, more than you could ever imagine. The **Naam**, the spotless living presence of the One, is in there, and it is beyond reach of ordinary thinking and has no end. Only the person who turns toward the light, the **gurmukh**, finds it — and even they find it because the One forgives them and draws them in.

An entire universe lives inside you — but its door opens by grace, not by force.
The deeper layer

This verse says a whole universe lies inside you. But only grace opens its door.

Is kaa-i-aa andar bahut pasaaraa — within this body is a vast expanse, a whole universe. The body isn't just flesh. It is a doorway to the endless. Gurbani often says that whatever is in the universe is also in the body. The One you might picture on a faraway throne is found by turning inward. We learn in school that space is unimaginably big. That same bigness is inside you too.

But there's a humbling twist. The treasure is inside, yet naam niranjan at agam apaaraa — the spotless Naam, the Name, is beyond reach and has no end. You can't just grab it like a snack from the fridge. A small, grabbing mind can't hold the endless. So "it's inside you" doesn't mean "you can take it whenever you like." The inside is as endless as the outside.

So how is it found? Gurmukh hovai so-ee paa-ay — only one who becomes gurmukh, turned toward the Guru's light, finds it. And even that isn't self-powered: aapay bakhas milaavani-aa — the One Himself forgives and draws us in. This is grace again. The treasure is inside you, but you can't force the door. It opens when grace forgives the ego that was blocking the view. The jewel was always there. The gift is the eyes that can finally see it. You stop being a burglar trying to break into your own house. You become a child welcomed home.

A Question to Sit With

What does it mean that something infinite could be inside you, yet you can't just grab it whenever you want? How might you make yourself ready to receive it instead?
