Sikhism·Raag Maajh·Shabad 60
Verse 3 of 9

You Get What You Truly Wanted, So Want Rightly

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
satgur sayvay taa sabh kichh paa-ay.
Serving the True Guru, all things are obtained.
ਜੇਹੀ ਮਨਸਾ ਕਰਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਤੇਹਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
jayhee mansaa kar laagai tayhaa fal paa-ay.
As are the desires one harbors, so are the rewards one receives.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭਨਾ ਵਥੂ ਕਾ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
satgur daataa sabhnaa vathoo kaa poorai bhaag milaavani-aa. ||2||
The True Guru is the Giver of all things; through perfect destiny, He is met. ||2||

In plain words

When you serve the True Teacher, everything you really need comes to you. And here's something important: whatever you're truly reaching for in your heart is the fruit you'll end up getting. The True Teacher can give anything — and you meet such a teacher through good fortune.

You don't just get what you do — you get what you truly wanted, so want the right thing.
The deeper layer

This verse says we receive the fruit of what we truly want inside, so it matters what we want.

Jayhee mansaa kar laagai tayhaa fal paa-ay — whatever your mansaa, your real wish, that is the fruit you get. We are not only rewarded for what we do. We are shaped by what we want. Picture two people helping side by side at the same place. One secretly wants praise. The other wants the One. Each one gets exactly what they were really reaching for. The wish of the heart is the seed, and the fruit matches the seed.

This is a gentle warning tucked inside good news. Satgur daataa sabhnaa vathoo kaa — the True Guru is the daataa, the Giver of all things, even the small things people come asking for. But if we come to the deepest source with a small request, we get a small answer and miss the One who was on offer. There is an old story of someone standing in a field of diamonds who asks only for a handful of pebbles — and gets exactly that.

So the verse invites us to look at our mansaa, what we truly want. In a shabad about cleaning the mind, this matters a lot. Hidden, selfish wants are part of the dirt the rest of the shabad talks about. Cleaning the mind partly means cleaning what we want — turning our reach from the world's pebbles toward the One. What we truly reach for, we get. So reach for the highest thing.

A Question to Sit With

If you got exactly what you've secretly been wishing for lately, would it actually be the best thing for you?
