Whoever serves the spotless One becomes spotless themselves. Through the Guru's **shabad**, the grime of ego (**haumai**) is washed clean off. Then the pure **bani** and the unstruck melody (**anhad dhun**) ring out within them — and in the True Court, they receive real honor.
We become like what we serve. Serve the spotless One, and His cleanness rubs off on us.
Jo nirmal sayvay so nirmal hovai — whoever serves the spotless One becomes spotless. This is the song's main rule in its plainest words. Other shabads by Guru Amar Das say it too. We become like what we serve, the company we keep, and what we give our attention to. Serve the world's grabbing, and we pick up its dirt. Serve the pure One, and His purity becomes ours.
It is not a prize handed out for good behavior. It simply catches, the way you cannot sit next to a warm fire without warming up.
Ha-umai mail gur sabday Dhovai — the Guru's Word washes off the dirt of ha-umai. Ha-umai is the feeling of being a separate "me." It is the one stain that matters most, because the others grow from it. Greed, anger, and clinging all sprout from "me." And notice what does the washing: the Guru's Word, not our own scrubbing. A muddy hand cannot clean itself with more mud. The Word is the clean water. We just have to stand in the stream.
Then come two gifts. The first is inside. Nirmal vaajai anhad Dhun banee — the pure song and the anhad Dhun ring out. Anhad Dhun means the "unstruck melody," music that plays with no instrument. It is the same inner music as the naad in verse two. Once the dirt of ego is washed off, the heart is like a clean, tuned guitar, and the music of the One can sound through it.
The second gift is in the biggest picture of all. Dar sachai sobhaa paavni-aa — at the True Court, they receive sobhaa, honor. But this is not the applause the ego craves. It is the quiet dignity of someone who has become truly clean. They are honored not for looking impressive but for being real.
The two gifts are really one. A heart washed clean of "me" both hears the music of the One and is welcomed home with honor. It has become the kind of clean, true thing that belongs near the True One.
Who or what do you "serve" with most of your time and attention right now — and what is it slowly turning you into?
