Sikhism·Raag Maajh·Shabad 68
Verse 6 of 9

Real Beauty Is Woven In From Within

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
nirmal tay sabh nirmal hovai.
Through the Immaculate Lord, all become immaculate.
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਹਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਰੋਵੈ ॥
nirmal manoo-aa har sabad parovai.
Immaculate is the mind which weaves the Word of the Lord's Shabad into itself.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਗੇ ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
nirmal naam lagay badbhaagee nirmal naam suhaavani-aa. ||5||
Blessed and very fortunate are those who are committed to the Immaculate Name; through the Immaculate Name, they are blessed and beautified. ||5||

In plain words

Through the spotless One, everything becomes spotless. A pure mind is one that *weaves* the divine **shabad** right into itself, thread by thread. Those who fasten themselves to the pure Name are deeply fortunate — through that pure Name, they become beautiful and bright.

Real beauty isn't applied to the surface — it's woven in from within, thread by thread, by what you let live in your mind.
The deeper layer

Real beauty is not painted on the outside. It is woven in from within, thread by thread, by what we let live in our minds.

Nirmal tay sabh nirmal hovai — through the spotless One, everyone becomes spotless. The song now makes its biggest claim. Purity is not a private treasure kept by a lucky few. It spreads. It flows from the One to a person, and then to everything that person touches. Another shabad says one changed life can carry a whole family across. Like light and like the nectar, purity comes from a source that never ends and shines outward.

The loveliest word here is parovai, which means to weave or to string, like putting beads on a thread. Nirmal manoo-aa har sabad parovai — a pure mind weaves the One's Word into itself. This is how the Word becomes part of us. It is not stuck on from the outside or memorized like a fact for a test. It is threaded all through the mind, until you cannot tell where the Word ends and the mind begins.

Think of a friendship bracelet. One bright thread woven all through it changes the look of the whole bracelet. And it is made slowly, thread by thread, not in one big move. Simran, keeping the One in mind, is exactly this kind of slow, steady weaving, day by day.

Nirmal naam lagay badbhaagee — those who hold on to the pure Name are badbhaagee, very fortunate. Notice the word "fortunate," not "successful." All through these songs, the good thing is a gift we receive, not a trophy we win. So it calls for thanks, not pride.

Nirmal naam suhaavani-aa — through the pure Name, they become suhaavan, beautiful. This word keeps coming back in these songs. It means the shine that shows on the outside when there is sweetness inside.

So the lesson lands gently. Real beauty is not put on the surface like makeup. It is woven in from within by what we let live in our minds. Weave in the pure Name, and you become truly and lastingly lovely. It is a beauty no mirror can give and no hard day can wash off.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing could you "weave into yourself" a little each day, until it becomes part of who you simply are?
