The One Who Protects Those Who Come

ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਾਲਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲੁ ਨਾਇਆ ॥
sarnaagatee parabh paaltay har bhagat vachhal naa-i-aa.
You protect and preserve those who take to Your Sanctuary, God; You are called the Lover of Your devotees.
par-hilaad jan harnaakh pakri-aa har raakh lee-o taraa-i-aa. ||2||
Prahlaad, Your humble servant, was caught by Harnaakhash; but You saved Him and carried him across, Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You keep safe everyone who comes to You — that is why You're called the One who loves those who love.

Long ago a young devotee was in danger from someone powerful and cruel, and You reached in and carried him across to safety.

The One stands with those who are small and in danger.
The deeper layer

This recalls the story of Prahlaad, the boy-devotee threatened by the tyrant Harnaakhash and protected. In the children's version the frightening details are set aside and the rescue is foregrounded: the One is bhagat-vachhal, "lover of devotees," and stands with the vulnerable. The message is protection, not terror.

A Question to Sit With

Who has stood up for you when you needed protecting?
