Keep My Mind at the Teacher's Feet

mat deh har parabh agam thaakur gur charan man mai laa-i-o.
Please bless me with such understanding, O Inaccessible Lord God, my Lord and Master, that my mind may remain attached to the Guru's feet.
har raam naamai raha-o laago jan naanak naam samaa-i-o. ||4||3||
Servant Nanak remains attached to the Name of the Lord; he is merged in the Naam. ||4||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Give me the kind of understanding, O One I can't reach on my own, that keeps my mind resting at the teacher's feet.

Servant Nanak stays close to the Name, and melts right into it.

Ask for the steadiness to keep your mind resting where it's nourished.
The deeper layer

A prayer for mati (understanding) that keeps the mind attached to the gur charan (teacher's feet). "Merged in the Naam" closes the shabad the way many Maalee-Gauraa shabads do: the seeker dissolving happily into the Name.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your mind stay resting on something good instead of drifting?
