The Doors Swing Open

ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਇਓ ਮਨਿ ਉਘਰੇ ਕਪਟ ਕਪਾਟ ॥
har keerat gurmat jas gaa-i-o man ughray kapat kapaat.
When one follows the Guru's Teachings, and sings the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, the doors of the mind, held shut by deception, are thrown open again.
ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਫੋਰਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ਲਜ ਭਾਨੀ ਮਟੁਕੀ ਮਾਟ ॥੩॥
tarikutee for bharam bha-o bhaagaa laj bhaanee matukee maat. ||3||
The three qualities are shattered, doubt and fear run away, and the clay pot of public opinion is broken. ||3||

In plain words

Follow the teaching, sing the praises of the One, and doors that were shut tight swing open again.

The tug-of-war of three pulls quiets down, doubt drifts off, and worrying about what everyone thinks loosens its grip.

Singing from the heart can open doors that worry had shut tight.
The deeper layer

This one says singing the One's praise opens the doors of the mind.

Kirtan means singing the praises of the One. When we sing with the Guru's teaching, man ughray kapat kapaat — the doors of the mind, shut tight by tricks and pretending, swing open.

Then three pulls on the mind grow quiet. Indian thought calls them the three gunas: dullness, restless wanting, and calm goodness. Doubt and fear run away.

Last, the clay pot of "what will people think" breaks. Think of worrying all day about what your class will say about your new haircut. Then one day you just stop worrying. That is not a crash. It is a relief, like putting down something heavy.

A Question to Sit With

What door inside you opens when you sing or create something?
