Verse 3 of 5

A Brother When Things Get Hard

ਜੈਸੇ ਰਣ ਮਹਿ ਸਖਾ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ॥
jaisay ran meh sakhaa bharaat.
As one's brother becomes a helper on the field of battle;
ਜੈਸੇ ਭੂਖੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਮਾਤ ॥
jaisay bhookhay bhojan maat.
as one's hunger is satisfied by food;
ਜੈਸੇ ਕਿਰਖਹਿ ਬਰਸ ਮੇਘ ॥
jaisay kirkhahi baras maygh.
as the cloudburst saves the crops;
ਜੈਸੇ ਪਾਲਨ ਸਰਨਿ ਸੇਂਘ ॥੨॥
jaisay paalan saran sayNgh. ||2||
as one is protected in the tiger's lair;||2||

In plain words

Like a brother who stands beside you when things get hard.

Like food that fills you when you're hungry.

Like rain that saves the crops.

Like being kept safe in a dangerous place.

The Name is like a brother who shows up exactly when things get hard.
The deeper layer

This one gives more pictures of how the Name stands by you.

Jaisay ran meh sakhaa bharaat — like a brother at your side in a battle. Then food for the hungry, and rain that saves the crops. Last comes being kept safe even in a tiger's den.

That last picture sounds scary, but the point is being kept safe. The danger is real, and the protection is stronger.

It is like a lifeguard at a big pool. The deep end is still deep, but someone is watching over you.

A Question to Sit With

Who stands beside you when things get hard?
