Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 1
Verse 5 of 6

The Only Distance Worth Minding

ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਵੀਛੁੜੈ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਮੇਲੁ ॥
vichhurhi-aa kaa ki-aa veechhurhai mili-aa kaa ki-aa mayl.
What separation could be worse than separation from the Lord? For those who are united with Him, what other union can there be?
ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੋ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਖੇਲੁ ॥੩॥
saahib so salaahee-ai jin kar daykhi-aa khayl. ||3||
Praise the Lord and Master, who, having created this play, beholds it. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

No being-apart is harder than being apart from the One who lives inside everything.

And once you feel that closeness, no other closeness could add to it.

So I praise the One who set this whole living play in motion and watches it unfold with love.

The closeness you most long for is one you already belong to.
The deeper layer

We fear losing people and things, but the deepest belonging is with the Oneness we are already made of, like a wave and the ocean. The world is khayl, a play the Creator both makes and delights in watching. Wonder replaces dread.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what makes you feel like you belong?
