Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 101
Verse 2 of 15

Through the Tenth Gate

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਲੋਭ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੁ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa lobh binaasan.
Eliminating egotism, possessiveness and greed,
ਨਉ ਦਰ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਦਸਵੈ ਆਸਨੁ ॥
na-o dar muktay dasvai aasan.
one is liberated from the nine gates, and obtains a place in the Tenth Gate.
ਊਪਰਿ ਪਰੈ ਪਰੈ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
oopar parai parai aprampar jin aapay aap upaa-i-aa. ||2||
Lofty and high, the farthest of the far and infinite, He created Himself. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the feeling of me and mine and grabbing loosens,

a person slips free of the nine ordinary gates and finds the hidden tenth.

High and far beyond reach, endless, the One who made even itself.

Loosening me and mine opens a door you didn't know was there.
The deeper layer

Ha-umai, mamtaa (me-and-mine), and lobh (grabbing) loosen, and the tenth gate opens. Then comes a striking image of self-existence: the One that brought even itself into being (aapay aap upaa-i-aa), full of wonder.

A Question to Sit With

What is one thing you hold too tightly?
