Verse 3 of 16

The Ache of Chasing Two Things at Once

aapay maylay day vadi-aa-ee.
Uniting with Himself, He bestows glorious greatness.
gur parsaadee keemat paa-ee.
By Guru's Grace, one comes to know the Lord's worth.
manmukh bahut firai billaadee doojai bhaa-ay khu-aa-ee hay. ||3||
The self-willed manmukh wanders everywhere, weeping and wailing; he is utterly ruined by the love of duality. ||3||

In plain words

When you turn toward the One, a quiet greatness settles over you.

By grace you begin to see how precious that closeness is.

A heart split between this and that stays restless, aching for a home it forgot it already has.

A heart pulled in two directions cannot rest; wholeness is the cure.
The deeper layer

Duality (doojai bhaa-ay, love of a second) is seeing two where there is one. The self-oriented heart is not condemned here, only shown to be divided against itself, and a divided heart cannot rest.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt torn between two things you wanted?
