Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 104
Verse 4 of 16

Losing Yourself, and Finding Yourself Again

ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚੇ ਪਾਈ ॥
ha-umai maa-i-aa vichay paa-ee.
Egotism was instilled into the illusion of Maya.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭੂਲੇ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
manmukh bhoolay pat gavaa-ee.
The self-willed manmukh is deluded, and loses his honor.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਨਾਇ ਰਾਚੈ ਸਾਚੈ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥
gurmukh hovai so naa-ay raachai saachai rahi-aa samaa-ee hay. ||4||
But one who becomes Gurmukh is absorbed in the Name; he remains immersed in the True Lord. ||4||

In plain words

When we forget the oneness, a small proud me takes over and pulls us this way and that.

That little self keeps tripping over itself and losing its way.

But sink into the Name, into the living presence of the One, and you rest in what is true.

The proud little me gets lost; resting in the One, you are found.
The deeper layer

Ha-umai is the feeling of being a separate self cut off from everything. It is a knot to be loosened, not a crime. Resting in the Name (the living reality the word points to) is where the divided self is made whole.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt most like your true, settled self?
