Verse 3 of 16

The Dark That the Guru Lifts

maa-i-aa moh anDh anDhaaraa.
Love and attachment to Maya are utter darkness.
ha-umai mayraa pasri-aa paasaaraa.
Egotism and possessiveness have spread throughout the expanse of the universe.
Night and day, they burn, day and night; without the Guru, there is no peace or tranquility. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Getting lost in the shine of things is like walking in the dark.

The feeling of me and mine spreads everywhere and keeps the heart restless.

The Guru brings light, and with light comes peace.

Me and mine keeps us restless; the Guru brings the light that calms.
The deeper layer

Maya is pictured as darkness, and ha-umai and mayraa (me and mine) as what spreads through it. The Guru is the light; peace is what light brings.

A Question to Sit With

When has understanding something scary made it feel less dark?
