Verse 9 of 16

A Wandering Heart Finds Its Way Home

manmukh Dhaat doojai hai laagaa.
The self-willed manmukh wanders distracted, attached to duality.
janmat kee na moo-o aabhaagaa.
That unfortunate wretch - why didn't he just die as soon as he was born?
aavat jaat birthaa janam gavaa-i-aa bin gur mukat na ho-ee hay. ||9||
Coming and going, he wastes away his life in vain. Without the Guru, liberation is not obtained. ||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A heart caught in seeing-two drifts, distracted and far from itself.

So much precious life can slip by in that restless drifting.

Freedom comes through the Guru, who is always there, ready to show the way home.

No matter how far a heart drifts, the Guru shows the way home.
The deeper layer

A heart caught in duality drifts and spends its life circling. Freedom comes through the Guru, and with the Guru the way home is always open.

A Question to Sit With

When have you found your way back to something good after drifting from it?
