Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 106
Verse 11 of 16

The Bath That Reaches Where Water Cannot

isnaan daan karahi nahee boojheh.
Some take cleansing baths and give donations to charities, but they do not understand.
ik manoo-aa maar manai si-o loojheh.
Some struggle with their minds, and conquer and subdue their minds.
saachai sabad ratay ik rangee saachai sabad milaa-ee hay. ||11||
Some are imbued with love for the True Word of the Shabad; they merge with the True Shabad. ||11||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Some wash in holy rivers and give freely to those in need, and still miss the deeper thing.

Some wrestle with their own minds and slowly learn to steady them.

And some fall in love with the living Word and melt right into it.

Good deeds matter, but the deepest change happens inside the mind.
The deeper layer

Sacred bathing and giving to charity are good, and they are still incomplete without inner understanding. In every tradition, the change of heart is the thing no outer act can stand in for.

A Question to Sit With

What is a good deed that feels even better when your whole heart is in it?
