Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 106
Verse 6 of 16

The Costume Is Not the Change

ik bhasam lagaa-ay fireh bhaykh-Dhaaree.
Some smear their bodies with ashes, and wander around in religious disguises.
bin sabdai ha-umai kin maaree.
Without the Word of the Shabad, who has ever subdued egotism?
an-din jalat raheh din raatee bharam bhaykh bharmaa-ee hay. ||6||
Night and day, they continue burning, day and night; they are deluded and confused by their doubt and religious costumes. ||6||

In plain words

Some cover themselves in ashes and wander in the robes of a holy seeker.

But no outfit, by itself, ever quieted the proud me inside.

It is the living Word that does that; without it, the outer show leaves the heart as restless as before.

A holy costume changes how you look, not who you are inside.
The deeper layer

Outer display of any kind, on any path, leaves the heart as it was. A costume changes how a person looks; the Word changes the inside.

A Question to Sit With

When is doing something for show different from doing it for real?
