The Barking Dog of Never-Enough

manmukh nindaa kar kar vigutaa.
The self-willed manmukh indulges in slander, and is ruined.
antar lobh bha-ukai jis kutaa.
The dog of greed barks within him.
jamkaal tis kaday na chhodai ant ga-i-aa pachhutaa-ee hay. ||8||
The Messenger of Death never leaves him, and in the end, he leaves, regretting and repenting. ||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Tearing others down only wears a person out.

Inside such a heart, greed keeps barking like a restless dog that never settles.

And a life spent only grabbing leaves a quiet ache at the end, wishing it had reached for what lasts.

Greed is a dog that never stops barking; only enough-ness quiets it.
The deeper layer

Greed is a barking dog that never quiets. A life spent grabbing reaches its end still wishing it had reached for what lasts.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you already have enough of, if you stop to notice?
