Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 107
Verse 10 of 16

Awake, or Still Dreaming

ik sabad veechaar sadaa jan jaagay.
Some contemplate the Word of the Shabad; these humble beings remain always awake and aware.
ik maa-i-aa mohi so-ay rahay abhaagay.
Some are attached to the love of Maya; these unfortunate ones remain asleep.
He Himself acts, and inspires all to act; no one else can do anything. ||10||

In plain words

Some live close to the Word and stay wide awake inside.

Some, caught in the shine of things, drift along half-asleep.

And through it all, the One acts and moves everything; nothing happens outside that.

The Word keeps the heart awake; forgetting lets it drift to sleep.
The deeper layer

Wakefulness (jaagat) versus spiritual sleep. The Word keeps a heart awake; forgetting lets it drift. And all of it moves within the One.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you feel awake and alive inside?
