A Sinking Stone, Asking to Be Lifted

kaam kroDh bharay ham apraaDhee.
I am a sinner, overflowing with sexual desire and anger.
ki-aa muhu lai bolah naa ham gun na sayvaa saaDhee.
With what mouth should I speak? I have no virtue, and I have rendered no service.
dubday paathar mayl laihu tum aapay saach naam abhinaasee hay. ||9||
I am a sinking stone; please, Lord, unite me with Yourself. Your Name is eternal and imperishable. ||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My hands feel empty; anger and restless wanting have pulled me around.

What can I say? I have little goodness of my own to show, and little I have given.

I feel like a stone slipping under the water; lift me, hold me, for Your Name never fades.

When you feel like you are sinking, it is brave to simply ask to be lifted.
The deeper layer

Anger and restless wanting can leave a heart feeling empty-handed, with nothing to show. From there comes a brave call for help: a sinking stone asking to be lifted, like the elephant crying out in the water.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you turn to when you feel like you are sinking?
