Weighing the One Treasure Worth Trading In

ਜਿਹਵਾ ਡੰਡੀ ਇਹੁ ਘਟੁ ਛਾਬਾ ਤੋਲਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਜਾਚੀ ॥
jihvaa dandee ih ghat chhaabaa tola-o naam ajaachee.
My tongue is the balance of the scale, and this heart of mine is the pan of the scale; I weigh the immeasurable Naam.
ਏਕੋ ਹਾਟੁ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ਇਕ ਭਾਤੀ ॥੩॥
ayko haat saahu sabhnaa sir vanjaaray ik bhaatee. ||3||
There is one store, and one banker above all; the merchants deal in the one commodity. ||3||

In plain words

My tongue is like the beam of a scale, my heart the little pan that holds the weight.

On it I weigh the Naam, a treasure too vast to measure.

In the end there is one great store, one keeper, and all of us are trading in the same one thing.

Everyone, on every path, is seeking the same one treasure.
The deeper layer

The picture is a shopkeeper's. Jihvaa dandee ih ghat chhaabaa: my tongue is the beam of the scale, and my heart is the pan. On it I weigh naam ajaachee, the Name too great to measure. The whole self becomes a scale for weighing the Name.

Then: ayko haat saahu sabhnaa sir. There is one store, and one banker over everyone. All the traders deal in the same one thing.

Think of a huge market with a thousand stalls, all selling from one single warehouse. People walk many paths. Underneath, they are all trading in the same treasure.

A Question to Sit With

What is the one thing you think everyone is looking for?
