Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 11
Verse 6 of 6

Inside and Outside, the Same One Everywhere

oopar gagan gagan par gorakh taa kaa agam guroo pun vaasee.
Above is the sky of the mind, and beyond this sky is the Lord, the Protector of the World; the Inaccessible Lord God; the Guru abides there as well.
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਭਇਆ ਉਦਾਸੀ ॥੫॥੧੧॥
gur bachnee baahar ghar ayko naanak bha-i-aa udaasee. ||5||11||
According to the Word of the Guru's Teachings, what is outside is the same as what is inside the home of the self. Nanak has become a detached renunciate. ||5||11||

In plain words

Beyond the wide sky of the mind is the Protector of all, hard to reach by searching alone.

And the Guru's word shows a wonder: what I find deep inside is the very same One I meet outside.

Nanak says: knowing that, my heart grows quietly free, at ease wherever it is.

The One you find deep inside is the same One you meet all around you.
The deeper layer

Oopar gagan gagan par gorakh means above is the sky, and beyond the sky is Gorakh. Gorakh means Protector of the earth. It is a name the Naths, a group of yogis, used for God, and Guru Nanak uses it with respect.

Then comes a big discovery: baahar ghar ayko. What is outside and what is inside the home of the self are the same One. It is like finding that the song in your headphones is also playing in the whole room.

At the end, Guru Nanak says he has become udaasee. That means free inside, not clinging to things. It does not mean leaving home or family. You can be free right where you live.

A Question to Sit With

When have you sensed the same something both inside you and out in the world?
