Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 110
Verse 5 of 16

When the Clinging Melts Away

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ॥
maa-i-aa moh sabad jalaa-i-aa.
Emotional attachment to Maya is burnt away by the Word of the Shabad.
ਸਚੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਜਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
sach man vasi-aa jaa tuDh bhaa-i-aa.
The True One comes to dwell in the mind, when it pleases You, O Lord.
ਸਚੇ ਕੀ ਸਭ ਸਚੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਿਖਾ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਹੇ ॥੫॥
sachay kee sabh sachee karnee ha-umai tikhaa nivaaree hay. ||5||
True are all the actions of the truthful; the thirst of egotism is subdued. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The tight pull of wanting more melts away in the warmth of the Word.

When the moment is right, the One who is true comes to live in my mind.

Then everything I do becomes real and clear, and the endless thirst of me-first grows quiet.

The restless thirst quiets on its own when what is real arrives.
The deeper layer

Maa-i-aa moh sabad jalaa-i-aa — attachment is burned away by the Word, but the timing is jaa tudh bhaa-i-aa, when it pleases the One. The tikhaa (thirst) of haumai is not shamed into stopping; it simply grows quiet once Truth arrives.

A Question to Sit With

What helps the wanting-more feeling settle down in you?
