Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 112
Verse 2 of 16

A Treasure That Overflows

ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
har kay bhagat bharay bhandaaraa.
Devotion to the Lord is a treasure overflowing.
ਆਪੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
aapay bakhsay sabad veechaaraa.
He Himself blesses us with contemplative meditation on the Shabad.
ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਸਹਿ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
jo tuDh bhaavai so-ee karseh sachay si-o man raataa hay. ||2||
You do whatever You please; my mind is attuned to the True Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Loving the One is a treasure so full it spills over.

The gift of quiet reflection is itself given to us.

Whatever You choose to do, my mind stays turned toward You.

Even the wish to reflect is already a gift.
The deeper layer

Loving the One is like a storehouse so full it spills over.

Har kay bhagat bharay bhandaaraa means devotion to the One is an overflowing treasure. Even the ability to think deeply about the Word, sabad veechaaraa, is a gift. Aapay bakhsay means the One gives it.

Then the heart says, jo tudh bhaavai so-ee karseh: You do whatever You please. This is not giving up. It is the heart lining up with the One, sachay si-o man raataa, dyed in the True One's color. Think of a sailboat that turns its sail to catch the wind. It is not weak. It works with the wind, and it moves.

A Question to Sit With

What is a gift you have that you did not have to earn?
