ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
dukh sukh kartai Dhur likh paa-i-aa.
Pain and pleasure are pre-ordained by the Creator.
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ॥

He Himself has caused the love of duality to be pervasive.

gurmukh hovai so alipato vartai manmukh kaa ki-aa vaysaahaa hay. ||5||
One who becomes Gurmukh remains detached; how can anyone trust the self-willed manmukh? ||5||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Both hard days and happy days come woven into the great design.
The pull toward feeling separate is part of that weave too.
The heart turned toward the Guru stays steady and free through all of it.
You can stay steady whether the day is hard or happy.
Dukh sukh kartai dhur likh paa-i-aa — pain and pleasure are woven in from the start. The Gurmukh remains alipato, untouched and free, through both.
A Question to Sit With
What keeps you steady on both your good days and your hard days?
